TEACHING

“I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.”

- Plato

My philosophy, as a teacher, is to encourage and motivate students to think critically and achieve their artistic goals. Through thoughtful planning and individualized attention, I hope to present students with attainable challenges that inspire them to not only be diligent in their practice but also fall in-love with the creative process.

To express one’s self through music, a great deal of reflection and self-knowledge must happen first. By helping a student name their strengths and areas needing improvement, I bring awareness to these areas and lead them toward a growth mindset. We make measurable progress by working on fundamentals, such as scales, rhythm, and the use of air and relaxation. We put these skills into practice by playing more substantial pieces. Although I assign music that will develop a variety of skills, I also encourage students’ interests, having them find and play pieces they enjoy.

Every moment, in music, is an opportunity to be intellectually and socially engaged. Some of my favorite memories are playing music with friends. Through teaching, I do my best to meet students where they are and empower them to be courageous, problem-solve, and develop the patience and understanding that it takes to become the person they want to be.
